Larry Page, Founder of Google

Larry Page was born on 26th March 1973 to Carl and Gloria Page. Both parents taught computer science at the University of Michigan, where Larry himself studied computer engineering. After graduating in 1995, he went on to study for a PhD in Computer Science at Stanford University, where he met Sergey Brin, his future Google co-founder.

Page and Brin aspired to build an internet search engine, and they immersed themselves in the world of computer science together at Stanford. In 1998, the pair took a leave of absence from the university and co-founded Google in a garage in Menlo Park, California.

After founding Google, Page launched a series of innovative services, including Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Earth, with the goal of organizing the world’s information and making it accessible and usable by people around the world.

Page initially served as Google’s CEO. However, since Page and Brin were very young to be in control of such a large company, they felt Google would benefit from a CEO with more business acumen and experience. And so, in 2001 Eric Schmidt Schmidt took over this role.

In 2004, Google’s initial public offering took place. The IPO raised about $1.67 billion, giving Google a market capitalisation of over $23 billion. At the time, there were concerns that the IPO would have a negative impact on Google’s culture, with shareholders saying that the company would cut employee benefits, but Larry Page made it clear that the IPO would not change Google’s culture.

In 2015, Page was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Alphabet, the new holding company created as part of Google’s reorganisation. As a result of this reorganisation, Google will continue to operate its internet business as a central subsidiary of Alphabet.

In 2019, Page and Brin announced that they would be leaving Alphabet. It was announced at the same time that Sundar Pichai would become the next CEO of Alphabet.
